SPACED OUT PRINT SERIES

This series takes inspiration from India’s recent propulsion into the frontier of the space-race as a starting point to explore the concept of space and a world on the brink of interstellar migration.

On September 24th, 2014, ISRO launched its first interplanetary mission - MARS ORBITER MISSION (MOM) to map the surface of the Red Planet. This work uses one of the images captured during the mission that shows one of the satellites silhouetted against the Martian surface. However what you see here is another satellite – the Aryabhatta – that has been introduced into the image. It represents India’s first unmanned Earth satellite built in 1975. The Aryabhata’s launch was successful at a time when leading space powers had little faith in India’s chances to produce an indigenous satellite. It is a reminder of the distance the Indian Space Program has travelled in the last 45 years with India recently launching a record-breaking 104 satellites into space in a single rocket in 2017.
